TV Time Capsule: Avatar: The Last Airbender

This week's TV Time Capsule show is the amazingly epic Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Avatar: The Last Airbender is an anime-esque cartoon that aired on Nickelodeon from 2005-2008 in its first run.  Though you may think the show is just for little kids since it's a Nickelodeon cartoon, it's actually a really engaging, hardcore awesome show that any sci-fi/fantasy/superhero/anime fan of any age would enjoy.

The show takes place in a world where people can control (bend) elements.  There are four nations, and each nation is the home of a certain type of bender - Waterbenders, Firebenders, Airbenders, and Earthbenders.  One person in the world can bend all four elements, and he's called the Avatar.  In this world, the Fire Nation starts a war on every other nation in order to take over the world.  They even wipe out all the Airbenders!  The Avatar, who's supposed to save everyone, disappears, so things turn to crap.  One hundred years later, a teenage girl from the Southern Water Tribe finds some random kid and a flying bison frozen in ice, and she frees them.  It turns out that the kid is the new Avatar (since Avatars get reincarnated) named Aang.  He's been frozen in ice for the last hundred years or so, and during that time, the Fire Nation has almost taken over everything.  It's his job to learn how to bend all the elements and bring peace to the world.  The rest of the show basically follows Aang's journey around the world, along with the teenagers who saved him and travel with him, siblings Katara and Sokka.

That's them.

Oh, and did I mention they use their element-bending skills to engage in epic element battles?

 Yeah, it's pretty legit.

It's a lot more complicated than that, but I don't want to give too much away to those of you who haven't seen it.  There are lots more cool characters, my faves being Toph and Uncle Iroh.  And the story is pretty intense.  I really recommend watching it!  You can find  Avatar: The Last Airbender on Netflix, and it comes on Nicktoons Network, too.  Watch it!  And in 2012 you can watch the new Avatar miniseries!!

Just don't watch the movie.  For Pete's sake, don't watch the movie!!!
